Soap in a coat (part 2)
Sunday, April 18, 2010
Soaps need wool coats too!
How do the two combine? I am not talking about making a soap to clean my knitted items, allthough that would be a good idea.
I am talking about making knitted wool coats for my soaps!
I have fueled (felted) wool roving around my soaps before. I used white roving and wrapped it with coloured yarn. Then fueled everything together by rubbing it, alternating between cold and hot water. Here is a picture of those soaps.
But this project is done in a whole different way. I basically knitted an envelope to fit the soap in. Inserted the soap and kept on knitting to close it off. Super little coat for my soap!
I used Cabin Fever Northern Lights 100% wool yarns for this project because they felt very well and quite quickly too.
These are the handmade soaps I made last fall for Christmas gifts. They smell wonderful and lather really well. They have lots of olive, coconut, canola oils and cocoa butter. Wonderfully rich feeling!
Why should you use felted soaps?
It's like having a built in washcloth. Gentle on your skin, and easy to handle onto in the shower or tub. The wool coat will enhance the lather as it gently exfoliates. The felt will also make your soap last twice as long and you will use every last little bit of soap. Once the soap is gone, use the felt as a scrubby or put it in a drawer to give your clothes a yummy scent.
To use: Wet your soap in a coat and create a lather.
I intend on giving them away unfelted. You can see the Before and After in the picture below.
I made a bunch of them to trade in a soap swap I am participating in. I will add what I have left to my shop to see how they do.
Have yourself a wonderful Sunday!

Just out of the dye pot
Just out of the dye pot, more bulky lambswool yarn. A mixture of several colours.
Skeined.
One of my favorite combination...green and blue.

Northern Sunset
I had not yet tried Wilton as a dye (not for icing either !) I was eager to see how they would look. I have a lot of bluky yarn on hand so I thought it would be fun to use it for this.
I have also been working on another fun project combining two things I love to do...soap making and knitting. I'll be back with pictures this weekend!

Spring dyeing
The second skein was overdyed with teal, ans saphire blue. It reminds me of a sunny spring sky.
The yarns are now listed in my shop.Saturday, March 13, 2010
No way I'm keeping it like this!
Today is the first saturday of my one week of holidays. The sun is allready shinning and temperatures are so mild.
I showed you the wonderful blue yarns from Sheepstings earlier. I promised to come back with pictures of my shrawl (shawl + shrug) as soon as the sleeves were sewed.

Transformation
But I needed something for the front entrance of the house. I was looking for some storage also. You know, a place to put away mittens, and purses, and a few candles.

Energized!
I could give it away or trade it or ignore it for a while longer. But the most fun solution is to overdye it.
This yarn is a wool and angora blend. I have almost 5 ounces of it.

I had several leftover KoolAid colours and Easter dye colours in jars from my last dye job. I figured I might as well put those to good use.
So I handpainted it and microwaved the yarn to set the colours. And VOILÀ!
Lots of life and energy. Now it looks like a lot more fun to knit up.

Apple greens
I have enough yarn left over to make a matching pair of mitts.
So I casted on last night. The first mitt is moving along quite well even though I had to rip back a few rows on three occasions. The pattern leaves a lot for the knitter to figure out. The second mitt, will move along much faster.Enjoy your day!
